A University of NSW team led by former CSIRO ICT Centre chief scientist Branko Celler is working with health insurer HCF to develop a decision support system that can help community nurses and GPs identify significant changes in vital signs data gathered from home monitoring devices.
The project is a spin-out from the Home Monitoring of Chronic Disease for Aged Care project that Professor Celler and his team ran as part of the $20 million telehealth pilots program, which showed that massive savings can be achieved in healthcare expenditure on an annual basis by using home telemonitoring of vital signs and nurses in the role of clinical care coordinators.
